Quality First Teaching

What is Quality First Teaching (QFT)?

Quality first teaching is a style of teaching that emphasises high quality, inclusive teaching for all pupils in a class, including those with identified additional needs. Quality first teaching includes scaffolded learning, strategies to support pupils with SEND's learning in class and on-going formative assessment.

Quality first teaching has existed in one form or another since teaching existed! Though the minutiae of what it involves has changed over time, some core principles have remained consistent – personalising learning to the individual needs of pupils, encouraging greater inclusion of pupils with SEN needs, and working to narrow the attainment gap.

The best schools will cater for many needs extremely effectively within the classroom, therefore reducing the needs for a CYP to be placed on a SEND register.

Wimborne Academy Trust schools follow Rosenshine's Principles of Instruction to ensure quality first teaching.
