Tourette's Syndrome
Stress anxiety
Raise staff awareness of the condition
Use of time-out card if necessary
Allow extra time to finish work
Acknowledge the effort the CYP has made – offer positive and constructive praise and feedback
Nervousness fear
Ensure that CYP peer group is made aware in consultation with the CYP – dispelling any myths and prejudices and encourage empathy
Allocate a suitable buddy who can support the CYP
Have a predictable timetable and routines and prepare in advance for any changes
Slower processing
Ensure extra processing time is given as CYP may not understand new ideas as quickly as others in the class
Encourage CYP to think and plan before engaging in a task
Ensure any homework is written and explained in planner / homework diary etc
Consider providing PowerPoints or notes before or after the lesson so that the CYP can revisit
Organisation / concentration
Seat CYP at the front or side of class so CYP can hear more clearly and see the board more easily
Encourage mind mapping
Offer work in a compact, visual manner
Frustration
Teach relaxation strategies - grounding techniques can be helpful
If you notice any tics becoming worse, remind CYP how to ground
Encourage slow speech
Allow frustrations to be vented in a safe and appropriate way
