Use time out to de escalate, where necessary

Use humour to diffuse (you need to know the CYP)
Distract then refocus on the task
Teach the CYP to spot the signs of escalation
Non compliant behaviour
Use the ABC of behaviour with the CYP
Praise when behaviour has been compliant
Use visuals for consequences - a flow chart can sometimes be helpful
Recognise that behaviour is a form of communication - try to work out what the behaviour is telling you so that you can be pro active with support
Low self esteem
Never shame the CYP -if reprimanding, do it away from peers
Distinguish between behaviours and the CYP
Be authentic with praise
Positively comment on qualities such as kindness or bravery rather than attainment
Allow opportunities for the CYP to succeed, and exceed expectations
Serious mental health concerns
Consult with parents and CYP
Consider a referral to CAMHS or a specialist for specific issues such as eating disorders
If accepted by CAMHS or the specialist, work closely with them to implement advice in school
If a CYP displays concerning behaviours or says anything that leads you to think that they may be at risk of harm, you MUST follow the safeguarding procedures; log it on MyConcern and inform the DSL straight away
